29 August The tiger at PenchAll we could see was a carass of a burnt tiger, few shreds of skin and strands of hair. The animal had been craftly electrocuted using live wire connection from the 11 KVA line passing overhead inside the forested core zone of the Pench Tiger Reserve, India's famous tiger sanctaury. Few days earlier a bison and a sloth bear had been mercilessly electrocuted near the same spot. The electric wire connect to the overhead line is spread horizontly on which the unsuspecting animals tread to meet their fate.
The callous officers knew this was happening but where more busy entertaining a high ranking forest offical at the forest rest house at Karmajhiri. On our request we were denied permission to meet him. The attitude was shocking. The death of the tiger was insignificant to them more important was the beaurocratic attendance in making. A promotion perhaps if the big boss was pleased.
The police sub inspector at Seoni was rife with argument as to the procedure that was followed or not by the forest officials. Those very forest officials are now at a higher post - a reward for negligence. The tiger died a silent death a National animal of pride for India. Who cares as long as India survives. There are plethora of justification for the extinction of the majestic big cat. India will survive we who believe in justice for all find the National emblem insignificant.
Who will miss the tiger perhaps the tourists, Indian travel agents, the coming generation and the ecosystem on which their lives would depend. But there are reasons to justify all ills and the demise of the tiger would be justified in a proper excuseable manner. An unfortunate occurance beyond human scope (sic) 19 August Bengal Tiger Article and News |
